At the time of the 2010 census, the population was 44,092. Some Wesley Chapel residents began a drive to incorporate the town in 2003, including areas not in the official CDP. This "city," which would have been Pasco County's largest and most populated, never materialized.
The neighborhood's original name is Double Branch because of the area's twin streams. But the name changed to match the Methodist chapel on the northwest corner of SR 54 and Boyette Road. "Gatorville" was a common moniker for the region.
